Peter’s Pence a witness of charity

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

June 29 is the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the patrons of the Church of Rome, and so also of the whole Roman Catholic Church throughout the world. These two saints, who were such powerful evangelists in the earliest decades of the Church, continue to inspire and encourage our own efforts here and now. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, as successor of St. Peter, continues to lead the church in the mission of our Savior, offering His grace where it is most needed in this life.

The Church’s mission to spread the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ happens in many ways, but one of the most powerful ways is the witness of charity. The collection for Peter’s Pence supports the Holy Father’s charity throughout the world. There are many places where the Church wants much more to be the visible sign of Christ’s mercy and peace, especially in the war-torn Middle East and in the face of many natural disasters.
In these situations, the Peter’s Pence Collection helps the Holy Father offer a peace the world cannot know, through his material support. Pope Francis will use the collection to strengthen dioceses, religious orders, and struggling faithful communities when they need it most. The collection also gives us the chance, by our solidarity in prayer and generosity, to extend a sign of peace to the body of Christ around the world. Our prayers and gifts will help the Holy Father carry out this part of Christ’s mission.

May your faith and hope may always grow in union with our Lord Jesus Christ, who loves each soul indescribably!

Your brother in Christ,

Most Reverend Walker Nickless
Bishop of Sioux City
