Bishop urges support for Holy Land
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
As you know, every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in every Catholic church to support the people and places of the Holy Land. Christians of the Holy Land rely heavily on the help that comes to them during this special moment of the year. The collection provides the means for the Franciscan monks of the Holy Land to maintain the many different shrines at the holy places, and especially to engage in the pastoral, educational, welfare, and health and social ministries that help improve the life of the Christian people and parishes of the Holy Land, so that these communities can be a safeguard of the Gospel.
The money raised will go to the completion of urgent restorations, such as the renovation of the roof of the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem and to support projects that provide housing to young families so that they can remain in the Holy Land. In addition, the collection will support a Catholic school network, especially through the parishes, fostering a widespread level of quality education to Christians and non-Christians alike.
This is a special work of peace in that region, and we know in our own diocese the great benefits our Catholic schools provide to us and our children.
Special attention will also be given to possible emergencies, and in 2014, the priority again is Syria, stricken by a war that is sadly in its third year.
On Good Friday, as we remember the Passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ for our sins, please prayerfully consider a generous contribution to this worthy and needy collection, so that the Gospel may always be proclaimed in the place where it began.
Your brother in Christ,
Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless
