Give generously to Peter's Pence
My dear friends in Christ,
June 29 is the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. These two great missionaries are the patrons of the Church of Rome, and so also of the whole Roman Catholic Church throughout the world. Our Holy Father, Benedict XVI, as successor of St. Peter, the first Pope, continues to lead the Church in the mission of our Savior, proclaiming His peace and grace where it is most needed in this life.
In many places, the Church struggles to be the visible sign of Christ’s peace: in poor dioceses where many depend on the Church for social and pastoral support; in regions where Catholics are persecuted and must be helped discreetly; in nations overloaded with refugees or victims of war and natural disasters. Here in the Diocese of Sioux City, we too have experienced the impact of economic recession, tornados and floods, and the threat of unjust persecution. We cling to the peace of Christ amidst these trials as the only true stability in this life.
The Peter’s Pence Collection provides others with the means to a peace they might not otherwise know. The collection gives us the opportunity, by our solidarity in prayer and in generosity, to extend a sign of peace to the body of Christ around the world. Our prayers and gifts will help the Holy Father support victims of disaster, war, and oppression and others in urgent need of assistance. Pope Benedict uses the Peter’s Pence Collection to strengthen dioceses, religious orders, and struggling faithful communities when they need it most.
Praying that your faith and hope may always grow in union with the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, who loves each soul indescribably, I am
Your brother in Christ,
Most Reverend Walker Nickless
